St. Albans is Hertfordshire's oldest town, a modern city shaped by over 2000 years of human occupation. From a Celtic Iron Age settlement, through the Roman conquest and subsequent sacking by Boadicea in AD 61,  later a Saxon settlement, and then the founding of the Norman Church in AD 1077 and the beginning of what is now known as St Albans. St Alban's Cathedral is built on what is believed to be the site of the martyrdom of St Alban, and the availability of huge amounts of building material from the ruins of nearby Roman Verulamium was put to good use in the Norman era, from which time many of the features of the building date. The Museum of St Albans tells the story of St Albans from the departure of the Romans to the present day and in the medieval gallery you can find out about Alban, Britain's first Christian martyr, and the Abbey that grew up around the site of his martyrdom.

And on Wednesdays and Saturdays the town Market offers everything from fish to fancy goods on over 170 stalls. Where else could you by a whole shark, healing crystals or herbs from a market steeped in history with a special Royal Charter granted in 1553. Indeed the market is well documented as far back as the 9th century.
